HS: Winter SIMA FAB 50 rankings, Dec. 23
It took 18 matches before the girls soccer team at [St. Thomas Aquinas fl-w] (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) conceded a goal.
And unfortunately for the Raiders, it that one goal ultimately ended an undefeated season.
Cypress Bay (Weston, Fla.) pulled off the 1-0 stunner last week in a meeting of top Florida-South programs, and the result sends Cypress Bay (15-0) to No. 15 in this week's SIMA FAB 50 winter girls rankings. Meanwhile, Aquinas (16-1-1), which had 17 straight shutouts to start the season, settles in close behind at No. 17.
The following are some of the highlights from last week's moves:
BOYS
Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) was the week's top mover, checking in at No. 14 after winning the inaugural Lotto Sport Western Showcase at San Clemente. Buchanan received goals from three players and defeated Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) 3-1 in the championship match. The eight-team event featured four SIMA FAB 50-ranked teams.
GIRLS
[St. John's Country Day fl-w] (Orange Park, Fla.) falls from the SIMA FAB 50 this week after losing to [Bolle School fl-w] (Jacksonville, Fla.) 3-0. The result marked SJCD's first loss after a 57-match undefeated streak. Only two days earlier, fast-rising Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) defeated Bolles 2-1.
Two weeks, two major titles for Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) keeps this powerhouse firmly in the No. 1 position. Last week, Cathedral Catholic won the Butch Lee Memorial Tournament with wins over Top 25-ranked Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.) and Carlsbad (Carlsbad, Calif.). This past weekend, Cathedral Catholic won the Mater Dei Premier Invitational, which included wins over three recent FAB 50 teams.
